Emily

Don Witten's recent Field Notes focused on Emily a special needs student in his classroom. As a project in his Lyricism class students were asked to put pictures of their lives to music. With help from family and friends click here to view Emily's.

Nerd Herd Update

The kids had a great time in St. Louis and represented our school with gracious professionalism while at the event. We placed 57th in the Newton Division, out of 100. We were 220th, out of 400, in the nation. Not too bad for a bunch of rookies!

Here are a few highlights from Championship:

  • Kids got to tour college and vendor booths…they had cardio vascular equipment companies, the CIA, Nasa, the Airforce and many other colleges and companies there to talk to the kids and give them prizes and scholarships. Many of the applications were online.
  • Kareem Abdul Jabbar was a guest speaker at the opening ceremonies and closing ceremonies. He also did a book signing for his book What Color is My World!
  • Our student volunteered to take VIP guests around the building and explained about the different contests, some using their bilingual skills for the international guests. One of the exciting guests that our students had were the VIP’s for Coca Cola. Great life and business skills for our kids at such a young age. Nathan Lausmann was upgraded to assistant and helped coordinate VIP guests down on the floor. He even had a headset and everything.
  • We saw a full sized Nasa model of Curiosity, the new Mars rover that will land in August on Mars.
