Principal's Message

Greetings to Duniway Families,
We celebrate student voices at Duniway! Our goal is to empower students to lead alongside adults in the building. For example:
40 Duniway students attended a Special Olympics Rally in Portland last weekend. On Monday, two of these students met with me to share their desire to plan an all-school assembly with a focus on tolerance and appreciation of all students, which of course includes those with special needs who are served in our Life Skills classroom.
A team of seventh grade students met with teachers and then created a survey taken by all seventh graders regarding where they would like to go for a year-end trip (Pacific City was the “winner.”). This student team is coordinating everything from bus requests to activities at the beach ~ they are “owning” it!
Our evening Talent Show was coordinated by students as they worked with adult mentors. A different group of four students then coordinated an all-school assembly held last week to showcase Duniway talent.
A group of over 50 students volunteered to clean Oregon beaches during Spring Break as part of the annual SOLV project, working with volunteers throughout Oregon and adults from our building.
Our Duniway News Team creates biweekly news reports, including topics such as stereotyping, work ethic, tolerance, and rumors. Their topics reinforce Bridges advisory topics introduced by teachers, and provide an avenue for student voices to have a positive impact our school climate.
I am absolutely proud of the way our students work with adults in the building to help set the tone at Duniway!
Carpe Diem!
