2014-15 School Calendar

Annual Talent Show

The Talent Show will be held May 15 at 1:00 PM for the students and 6:00 PM for families and friends.

We’re Looking for Kindergarteners!

If you have (or know of) a child who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2014, then you are encouraged to get your child registered for kindergarten.

Parents may pre-register their kindergarteners for the 2014-2015 school year during the District’s Kindergarten Roundup on Thursday, May 8 from 3:00 to 6:00PM. All McMinnville elementary school offices will be open to provide registration paperwork. If you are not sure which school is in your neighborhood area, you may call the district office at 503-565-4000. In order to register a child for kindergarten, parents must provide their child’s birth certificate as proof of age, an updated record of their child’s immunizations and proof of address.

We recently finished another fun season of Oregon Battle of the Books at Grandhaven Elementary School! About 50 students from grades 3-5, formed teams of 4 or 5 and then read 16 books selected by the state Battle of the Books committee. These teams then battled against each other in game-show-style quizzes that asked questions about the content of these 16 books.

At the end of our Grandhaven competition—which included an 8-team playoff and a final battle in front of a school assembly—our 2014 winning team was the Loquacious Lizards, made up of 5th graders: Jillian Bird, Ethan Janssen, Mackenzie Marshall, Cody Martin and Kristen Noyes.
However, the Lizards didn’t stop there! They then went on to a district tournament, held at Sue Buel Elementary, to compete against the winning teams from other McMinnville elementary schools. Our Grandhaven team won the tournament, going undefeated throughout the tournament and bringing home the traveling district trophy once again!

We want to congratulate all 12 teams who participated at Grandhaven this year. We are proud to see them digging in to some great books and then enjoying the quiz competitions! We also would like to thank Brian Janssen, our parent volunteer, and part-time library assistant for all his time and efforts in organizing the teams and tournaments for another successful year of Oregon Battle of the Books at Grandhaven Elementary School!

Last week on Friday, March 14, Grandhaven Special Choir performed three songs at the McMinnville School District Choir Festival under the direction of Kendra Friar. This group of 60 students from fourth and fifth grades meets weekly every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30PM as an After School enrichment class. They provided a great performance for the audience.

Congratulations to our spelling bee winners

They will represent Grandhaven at the district spelling bee March 7th!

Monday, March 3rd we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday! We celebrated by wearing hats and having a school-wide read aloud. All students signed up for a story of their choice and our entire staff were readers.  We all enjoyed a snack following our story.  Many other fun activities took place throughout the day at each grade level. | Slide Show

Students will make up school on June 13th 2014
