National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes and encourages academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. 45 new members were inducted into the McMinnville High School Chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony at the Community Center Monday evening.
A five member Faculty Council reviews each student’s candidate form to ensure they meet with MHS’ rigorous standards, granting membership to those who exhibit not just strong academic records, but also service to school and community, leadership, and outstanding character. Through chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.
The ceremony was facilitated by this year’s Executive Board: Yuhua Hughes, President; Claire Bernhisel, Vice President; Jordan Ferry, Secretary/Treasurer; and Stephen Gilliat and Lauren Ulvang, Service Chairs. Dr. Kris Olsen, MHS principal, was on hand to offer his congratulations to the new members and guest speaker Mr. Don Witten shared humorous insight, wisdom, and advice offered up by his former students. Advisors Sarah Breyer and Meagan Briery are excited to have such a large class of inductees to bring new ideas and energy to the club’s service projects. Article/photo Sarah Breyer
