Tara Romero

TRomero@msd.k12.or.us

(503) 565-4922

Getting to Know Ms. Romero

What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, listen to podcasts, treasure hunt at Goodwill and read blogs.

What is your favorite word?
My favorite word is realm.  I don’t know why really, I just like it.

What is your favorite animal?
My favorite animal is a polar bear.  I love how they live and survive in a extreme habitat.

What is your favorite subject to teach?
I love teaching writing.  I wasn’t a good writer as a kid because I thought that you were just born a good writer.  I never seemed to know how to make my writing good.  Now, I have been learning a lot of tricks from Lucy Calkins (a writing teacher that teaches teachers how to teach writing) and I am realizing that writers become good writers by studying what other writers do.  In class we study a lot of passages in the Chicken Soup for the Soul books.  Those stories are very similar to the kind of writing I hope my students will write.  I enjoy seeing students start the year thinking that writing is hard and ending the year with amazing stories in their writing folders.

What would you write a book about?
Ooohhhh, that’s a good question!  I have a lot of funny stories from when I was a kid or even from yesterday.  I would write a book with a strong female character who is kind of unorganized but who had a big heart.  She probably would wear purple boots and have pigtails.  She might have a white husky dog named Max.  I think she’d be a cross between, “Ramona”, “Clementine” and Pippi Longstocking.

If you had $1000, what would you spend it on?
I would first buy a big desk so that I would have more room for my many projects.  Then, I would pay for dental work for a young girl I know.

If you were 20 years younger, what would you do?
Well, if I could go back in time, I would know that mean kids are only mean because they are lonely and have a lot of stress going on in their lives.  So, I would try to not let mean people bug me so much and would try to be friends with them.

What would you invent?
Ok….this is difficult to share, because I don’t have a patent for it yet, and I don’t want you to steal my idea.  I want to invent a Smartboard Student Desk.  Students could write all of their assignments on their desk and it would import it into my computer.  Tests would grade themselves!  Imagine the time that would be saved!  It would eliminate all of the paperwork and allow me to spend more time working with students, or planning lessons.  Let me know if you have any investors.

What prank would you pull?
Boy, I’m not so good at pulling pranks.  I would be worried that I would hurt someone’s feelings or that I’d get in trouble.

Where would you go if you could go on a dream vacation? Israel.  I want to see the Jordan river and the Sea of Galilee.

Mr. Strobel has been married twenty-seven years, and has three children. His oldest daughter and son live and study at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. His youngest daughter attended Newby Elementary for all six years, and is now a student at McMinnville High School. Mr. Strobel’s wife is a Social Worker and a Counselor here in McMinnville.

His favorite time in American History is the colonial era. Ben Franklin, Samuel Adams and Thomas Jefferson are some of his colonial heroes. He likes Ben Franklin’s sayings so much that he has put many of them into practice. Many people don’t know that it was Ben Franklin who first wrote the idea behind “No pain, no gain.”

Mr. Strobel also enjoys photography. The back wall of his room became so filled with photographs of his many students over the years he had to take them down so he had more room for new pictures. He also enjoys bicycling. Each summer he rides his bike from McMinnville to the beach at Pacific City with a few friends, or one of his brothers. He also loves hiking and identifying plants along the trail. During the summer he gardens, raising all sorts of edible plants in his backyard. He’s a strong believer in good nutrition, so growing vegetables and fruits for his family’s meals is a high priority.

His favorite authors include C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Wendell Berry, G. K. Chesterton, J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter), Jerry Spinelli (Maniac Magee), and George MacDonald. He also really enjoyed the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

Mr. Strobel really loves teaching. His favorite subjects are History, Science, Literature and Writing. Oh! He loves art as well! His students eventually find out that he likes writing so much that he’s written his own novel entitled A Matter of Revenge that he hopes to get published some day.

Welcome to the Newby community where kids are loved above all else. Rosie truly believes that it takes the whole community to raise a child. A lot of love, a little discipline and a whole lot of learning are going on here, and she is grateful for the opportunity to play a small part.

Rosie has worked with young people from infants through college either in her job or as a volunteer over the years. She really wanted to be a school secretary, but was turned away because they were afraid that she wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure of having children in her office all the time, so she accepted second best and took a job at Stanford University where she spent 15 years as a commencement and event coordinator, and administrative assistant. She is happy to now be a part of the Newby family.
