Welcome to the Web Site of
Josephine Wascher Elementary School
Home of the Wascher Wildcats!
Josephine Wascher Elementary is located in Lafayette, Oregon (population 3,030), approximately eight miles northeast of McMinnville. We are proud to be part of McMinnville School District. Students from the Lafayette area also attend Patton Middle School and McMinnville High School. Named for a long time Yamhill County teacher and principal, Josephine Wascher, our school was built in 1980 with an extensive remodel in 1998. Seven additional classrooms and a new cafeteria will be completed for Fall 2008.
The current Josephine Wascher Elementary has 47 staff members who serve over 370 students! We provide 13 first through fifth grade classes and three sessions of kindergarten (half-day) programs. We are a Title I School. Title I funds offer additional support to our youngest learners: Kindergarten Plus enriches literacy learning for selected kindergarten children by providing an extended day. Additional Title One funding allows for instructional assistant time to support student success in all grades.
Approximately 24% of our student population speaks English as a second language. We have 1.5 English Language Learner teachers (ELL) and two assistants who support language acquisition for our ELL students.
Other support staff includes a Child Development Specialist, Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach, Speech-Language Teacher, Learning Resource Room Teacher (special education), two secretaries and one principal.
Through a partnership with McMinnville Parks and Rec, we are able to house after school programs such as Power Hour(academic support) and Kids on the Block (supervision, enrichment and recreation).
Our school rules are Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful. Our mission is to empower students to be life long learners.
